I have a new marine carpet set ... this has waterproof rubber impregnated backing, all edges are bound ...
However they forgot to add a hole though carpet to access hatch opening catch. (floor locker)
Normally a 75-100 hole is in the carpet to allow latch operation (lift & turn type).

I can easily make the hole, but how can I neatly 'bind the edges of the the hole ?

Suggestions ?
I certainly don't have skills to hand sew it.

My only thought so far is to glue on a binding tape with Stormeal http://www.amazon.co.uk/STORMSURE-STORMSEAL-WATERPROOF-WATERPROOFING-REPAIR/dp/B002YXYTPI
Used this stuff on covers, and even on diving dry-suits ... certainly sticky & waterproof, but may not be easy to do this and keep it neat.

Maybe the guy at the local upholstery shop would cut and bind it for a few bucks$....

Not even sure if there are any such shops left ... all ones I know closed down, not many people repair or recover nowadays they just replace .... but I'll look.

It's the centre 'floor hatch' ski locker as you can see no hole in carpet.

If the hole is to small they cant bind the opening. I think if it's smaller then 5 inches normally they can't make the turn on the machine. If you need the hole and to have it bound you would need to cut the carpet at some point and bind the hole and the cut edge.
Where did you get the carpet and was it made from a template you sent them?

It will be about 3" diam I guess.
As it is near edge .. could be cut in to avoid tight turns of just a circle.

Dropped an email to 2 upholstery shops I found.

The truth is, you can cut it out, then take a needle and some black nylon sewing thread and stitch around the hole by hand.....then rub some black silicone rubber into your stitching to help bind it together....just do it yourself, may surprise you what you can do with a little backyardigan skills!....plus it'll be fun, you learn something and have the satisfaction of doing it yourself!...

Annoying that I bought 'custom fit' carpets for the boat, to get it all a good fit.

I could 'cut' into hole as suggested ... something like:

The hole is too small to bind via machine. Best option is cut the hole with a hot knife, which will melt the edges of the poly carpet and backing. Personally, I would just lift off 1 snap when I needed to open the hatch. How much trouble it that?

Agree. Fuse with heat.

I have a 'hot knife' .. type for cutting rope.
So could use that.
Reason I don't want to just pull up a pop stud each time is that studs are working loose, concerned they may pull through carpet.

Maybe I'll cut an inverted 'U' in from edge, but still need to find a way to bind, or it will look crap.

Is that latch such that you could remove it, Cut the hole, and reinstall latch so that it covers the cut edge?

Just a thought.
