Halfmoa: My name is Half and I'm a Starcraftaholic...
All: Hi Half.
Halfmoa: I've been clean since winterization a week and a half ago but lately I've been getting that feeling...you guys all know what I mean...I can't stop thinking about my Super Sport.

Seriously though, I'm doing a deck replacement this winter and contemplating replacing the stock flip seats with pedestal seats and building a bench in front of the splashwell. I've seen this thread where a bench was built and that's more or less what I'm wanting to do. My Super Sport is a 16 footer so it's shorter than the boat in that post but the concept is the same. I'm also going over ideas to make the seat fold down flat to make a sort of sunpad as well as flip/slide forward to allow access to the fuel tanks and battery. I'd like to make the seat closer to the deck than the example in the link. Any thoughts or experiences?

First the seat part lifts and storage under it with a seperate floor. OR pull the whole seat forward and have to climb over it to get to the motor if needed ,thats why by myself I have removed it and put a drop vinyl sheet in place. then reinstall it company comes for a boat ride or a cruse. Thats not my boat but the same exact setup.

I'm kinda thinking a combination of the two. It'll have a storage "chest" type design where the seat will flip up and have a storage area with seperate bottom to provide full enclosure and the entire assembly will be free floating to allow access to the area under the splashwell. I utilize the space under the flip seats for the backup prop, tube inflator and something else I cannot recall right now...lol...so that storage space will have to be accounted for.

Lots of thoughts so far! Thanks everyone!

LOL thats what I just tried to explain it is a dual setup as built. Good luck be sure tio use good wood and sealer. Look at the photo real close you can see the hinge on the bottom of the seat in the front that allows it to fold our for access to the storage ,I keep everthing from soup to nuts in there .

That's exactly what I'm wanting to do, 86! Anything you'd do differently if you had to build another bench? Words of wisdom?

I didn't pickup on the fabrication method you plan to use: all wood, do some fiberglassing, etc. In his hull extension thread, oops! did FG seating for his boat.

Relative to your desire for the pedistal seats, I have always had the opinion that you can never have enough storage space on a boat. So, I don't want the area under my bottom to be wasted.

Re: Making a rear bench seat

I planned on using all wood for construction. In regards to the front seats I'm considering building what would basically be the front half of the current double sided flip seats. That idea would allow for additional storage and would probably be sturdier than a pedestal seat.

Frankly I'm a little concerned about the stability of pedestal seats and I'm gonna need to look into it before I make a final decision. The lake I'm on is 11,000+ acres and there's some BIG boats and BIGGER wake. In the two months of boating this year my son was thrown from port to near over starboard when we crashed over a roller and stopped abruptly when the bow contacted the next and my buddy almost went over the windshield another day in a remarkably simmilar situation. I'm not sure a pedestal seat wouldn't have ripped free the day my buddy was thrown. He actually landed on me and I'm 100% sure if I didn't have ahold of the wheel I would've gone overboard....which reminds me....need to get that kill switch moved higher on the priority list.

Frankly I'm a little concerned about the stability of pedestal seats

I have these pedestals for my driver and passenger seats and they are hella-sturdy http://greatlakesskipper.com/produc...ch-boat-seat-pedestal-w-swivel-and-slide.html I doubled up the thickness of the 3/4" plywood deck in that area and lag bolted them. They certainly do not seem to be going anywhere. http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w200/ezmobee/New Boat/DSCF2728-2.jpg

New models have pedestal seats.

As EZ says, add 3/4" extra ply underneath the decking where the bases get mounted. The bolstering is attached to the main deck, and the main deck is attached to the stringers and outer ribs.

Basically, the seat mount is effectively attached to the entire deck strength-wise.

Thanks guys!

It's a little unnerving to feel your boat surge and then instantly drop 10mph and have a 300lb man in your lap. I'm also fairly certain that if I hadn't recently replaced my dash panels I'd have ripped the steering assembly completely free of it's mount.

Ezmobee, what seats did you mount on those?

Man the cost of seating adds up fast, doesn't it? This might have to be a next winter project...

Re: Making a rear bench seat

As for actual seating, try VEADA

They are located in "Tinland"..............lol

In Indiana where aluminum is King

They manufacture and supply to the boating industry, great prices and high quality, and you choose the custom colors.

As far as hardware, the knock on the 238 series was the post always getting stuck in the base. I changed to Springfield hardware.

Here on the Intracoastal we get very large boats with very large wakes. Everyone generally slows accordingly to the size of the wake and the capability of their boat. Don't beat your boat and your passengers to death on wakes/waves.
