Hey all, a good friend of mine was trying to change the impeller on his 2005 4 stroke 115 Merc out drive. He got the impeller changed and was trying to put the lower unit back on. Here is is quote of what then happened.

"Slipped lower end in, had trouble, rotated drive shaft slightly and it slid right in. Was able to start nuts onto studs and as I drew lower end up I heard a clunk sound and oil started to leak from the lower cowl area of the engine."

Can anyone please give us some insight on what might have happened here? I am going to go over and try to give him a hand, but having never owned an outdrive, I'm a bit lost on what we should be looking for.

Thank you!

The drive shaft goes through the oil pump...sure hope he didn't damage the pump...power head will need to come off to get to the pump.....there would be some oil in the pump however shouldn't be a lot as the bulk of the oil is in the motor...
