Maine HIN on Registration

Hey everyone,

I have a question regarding a new boat I just bought. I bought a 1986 Glastron HSP110 from a guy in Maine. There was no title, but he gave me his previous registration. I am looking at the VIN/HIN and it doesn't match the HIN on the boat.

The registration shows the last 6 as matching, but the first numbers are random. I didn't know if this is how Maine does it on their registrations or did this guy give me a fake registration.

The HIN from the boat is CN004303G586
Registration shows 00000011638BT03G586

I'm registering it in MA so I need the previous registration to title it in this state. Any help would be amazing.

I'd suggest you return it to the seller, get your money back and get the seller to figure it out.

Somethings not right, either deliberately or unknowingly gave false documentation. Possibly back when guy you bought it from bought it from someone else. Its a problem not easily resolved by anyone other than last listed owner of record either by title or registration.

CNO is the old Glastron-Carlson MIC prefix, I beleive, After 1988, the MIC prefix went to GLA. The boat was made July 5, 1986 (ie, G586)

'04303' is the sequentially assigned portion of the HIN. I have no idea what the '00000011638BT' if front of the last 6 digits of the HIN is or has to do with anything.

Note to yourself, before you hand over $,$$$ and drive off with a boat, make sure the numbers on the paperwork match the boat.

As for Massachusetts . . . I did have an issue with a boat that I bought about 6 years ago. The HIN on the registration had a typo in it and did not match the boat HIN on the transom. . . close, but not a match. I put my poker face on and went into the DEP office and walked out with a new title and registration. Your situation is a bit different because the two number are so grossly different. Not sure they will make a stink about it or not. Worth a try though.

Thanks for the information. I am planning on doing the same thing. The registration I got from him looks real and I have no reason to believe its not. I'm sure you know how MA is and their paperwork though. It's like they try to find a reason to tell you no before they actually try and help you.

It's a 16' bass boat with a 110 on it and I got the boat for $1200. So even if it falls through I won't be out of money.

Worst case is that if you have all of the proper paperwork but the numbers don't match and the registration folks won't issue a title/registration, you could have the boat inspected and issue a state HIN. Therefore you will now have paperwork that matches.
