Maiden Voyage Goes Bad

So I have spent the last 8 Months rebuilding just about everything on my 18' Runabout with a Volvo 230 and SP outdrive.

I put it in the water yesterday, started it up, and everything seemed to be ok. I pulled away from the loading ramp and cruised at idle speed out of the no wake zone. I then tried to give it some gas and it stalled out. I tried doing this a bunch of times and the motor won't rev over 2100 RPMS.

When it is not in gear it will rev high, around 5000 RPMS. But as soon as I put in in gear it spudders and dies at 2100 RPMS......

I do have low compression on the #4 cylinder, its 85lbs where as the rest of the cylinders are 150lbs. I just pulled the head about a week ago, got the head planed because the machine shop said I had a warped head. When I put the head back on it fixed my low compression on cylinder one, but now I have the low compression on cylinder 4. I could also not be timed correctly....


I was hopeing I could just put the boat in the water and cruise around for a couple hours to keep me motivated in this boats rebuild.

What do you guys think the problem is? Could it be the outdrive?

Get the compression up on the low one and set the dwell and timing, it'll probably run fine.

If I do have a warped block, can that be fixed or must it be replaced?

You need to do a leak down test to determine what is actually leaking on #4, BEFORE you take it apart again.
I doubt you have a warped block.

i agree with Don would take a lot to warp a block. get the compression on all cylinders within 10% of each other set the dwell and the timing. If it couldn't be timed something is going on.
