I have been a boat owner now for a whopping five days. We just bought a little lake house for weekends/vacations so I started looking at vintage runabouts since I was always drawn to that style. Looked at 9-10 until I found my baby.
I purchased a 1968 Mohawk Boat Co. 15ft runabout with a '68 Mercury 650. I am lucky to be the third owner and even luckier that this boat has seen light use and has always been garage kept. Mohawk Boats were made in Amsterdam NY, about 45 minutes away from my house.
I live outside Albany NY and we decided to drop it in the Hudson River since we have not closed on our place yet. I had heard the motor run in a barrel and ran it again on the muffs yesterday, but had NO way of knowing how it would fair in the water. I was told that the motor had been maintained very well and it looks great. It came off the trailer easy. We tied it off at the dock. I adjusted the trim pin, primed the motor and to my surprise she fired right up with no choke and was off the high idled arm in under 30 seconds.
So far so good. We eased it into gear and away we went with my fingers crossed for good luck. We ended up taking a hassle free 50 minute cruise up and down the Hudson. When I opened her up, there were no hiccups or hesitations. She just went. Don't know how accurate the speedo is, but we hit 35mph a few times with no problems. It rides and handles great as well.
I feel fortunate that all went well the first time out. I am excited to be a boat owner and will continue to cruise this forum for great info and advice.
Here are a few pics of my boat.....Joe
