I have been a boat owner now for a whopping five days. We just bought a little lake house for weekends/vacations so I started looking at vintage runabouts since I was always drawn to that style. Looked at 9-10 until I found my baby.

I purchased a 1968 Mohawk Boat Co. 15ft runabout with a '68 Mercury 650. I am lucky to be the third owner and even luckier that this boat has seen light use and has always been garage kept. Mohawk Boats were made in Amsterdam NY, about 45 minutes away from my house.

I live outside Albany NY and we decided to drop it in the Hudson River since we have not closed on our place yet. I had heard the motor run in a barrel and ran it again on the muffs yesterday, but had NO way of knowing how it would fair in the water. I was told that the motor had been maintained very well and it looks great. It came off the trailer easy. We tied it off at the dock. I adjusted the trim pin, primed the motor and to my surprise she fired right up with no choke and was off the high idled arm in under 30 seconds.

So far so good. We eased it into gear and away we went with my fingers crossed for good luck. We ended up taking a hassle free 50 minute cruise up and down the Hudson. When I opened her up, there were no hiccups or hesitations. She just went. Don't know how accurate the speedo is, but we hit 35mph a few times with no problems. It rides and handles great as well.

I feel fortunate that all went well the first time out. I am excited to be a boat owner and will continue to cruise this forum for great info and advice.

Here are a few pics of my boat.....Joe

Vintage is right...your registration number is "6"! I wonder if the first five boats registered in your state, are still going as strong...:D

ONLY KIDDING! Nice looking rig!

Happy boating!

Wow, that little boat is in great shape. I did notice a chip in the gelcoat on the bottom corner that should be looked at. If you see any glass it should be repaired. You don't want to park it under those tree's as the needles are slightly acidic and will wreak havoc on it in no time. If you have the room the garage is the best place for it.It's sure nice to see older things that have been taken care of instead of being left to rot.

NoKlu, you are right about that one small chip. That is the only spot on the entire boat and it is on the very short list for repair. I have an Uncle who is a body man that is going to take care of it. The boat is now in the driveway and has a new waterproof cover. I know those pine needles would reak havoc on her, so I won't give them a chance.
It will occupy a space in the garage before too long. I looked the entire hull over and other than the small chip, there is not even one even remotely significant scratch. I got lucky with this one and think I did pretty well. I weigh 250 and cannot find a single soft spot in the deck. Most others I looked at did not pass this test. I think I did pretty well at $675.00 for boat, motor, trailer, paperwork for both AND delivery.

Yea thats is a great condition old boat, and a great looking motor as well. No wonder it works well. Amazing how far a little care and pride in something one owns will go in making something last a good long time. I guess good craftsmanship in the building process plays a big part in it as well.
New York Mohawks boats, named after an Indian nation.

What a sweet little runabout. I had a '72 Crestliner about the same size and it never looked that good, even on a good day. Keep it covered and it will continue to look good. Real good deal too. Enjoy the boat and the lake house, and welcome to the forum.

what a beauty that is. Kinda like looking at a time capsule of what boating used to be, without all the add-ons and doo-dads that you see on boats today

What is that chrome scoop looking piece, vent for built in fuel tanks?
1st time I've seen the controls located in the center like that.
Pretty boat all around.

Re: Maiden Voyage a smashing success!!

I did feel momentarily guilty with the small sum of $$$ I parted with to get this boat : ) The previous owner seemed happy to know it was going to someone who would use it and maintain it properly. It will get the same treatment all of my motorcycles have received over the years.

To answer a previous question, I can only imagine the two chrome scoops in the back are for venting as there is a hose hooked up to both.

Thanks for the encouraging words. Joe
