Machine gears or replace??

Hi everyone, I'm usually in the Force section here. I have a 69 model 25 HP Johnson Seahorse with 1973 lower unit. The forward gear and clutch dog edges are worn (not too badly though) and it won't stay in gear. I have heard others say that they have machined the edges on gears and dogs and it has worked. A new gear set for this thing costs about $275+ if it can be found. I don't plan on keeping this motor for a long time. Besides purchasing used on eBay (risky), what is the best way to go here? How much can I expect to pay for machine work? Thanks!

I've done them myself with a die grinder and a high speed rotory file. If you have someone do it I imagine it will cost a lot less than a set of new gears.
