M50D Oil level sensor cap not tight

The Oil Level Sensor does not stay stuck in the top of the oil tank, and oil will spill out when trailering etc. What I see is just a rubber-type cap/plug with the wires coming out the side of the cap-part and nothing to hold it into the top of the tank, except maybe some 'barbs' in the plug-part. It looks like the barbs might hold it in if the diameter of the plug was larger, but it all fits very loosely. It looks just like what is pictured in a parts catalog, so I am at a loss as to why it doesn't stay in (or why it even should).

So...
Is there a part missing?
Has anyone seen this before?
Is there any 'fix', or do I need to buy a whole new sensor?

Thanks to all for your help/input!

The rubber part of the sensor has shrunk with age. The solution is to replace the sensor or to just slop sealant on the one you have.
