M40C shift shaft removal

How do I release the shift shaft on my M40C. I can see where the top f the shaft sits over a pin on the shift assembly, however, I can't figure out how to get it off the pin. Any tips would be appreciated.

Are you trying to release the shift rod coupler or are you trying to pull the shift rod out of the lower unit?

I need to service the water pump, so whatever, is the easiest means of disengagement of the lower unit.

Step 1) Pick up a service manual.

Step 2) Drive roll pin out of shift coupler on shift rod.

Step 3) Remove 4 bolts that hold on lower unit.

Step 4) Catch lower unit before it hits the ground.
