what is the differance between the lx 3.0 and the non lx 3.0?
which is better?
which has more horse power?
how do i tell the differance?

my 3.0 in my boat is busted up (froze cracked below the head) and i was able to find a differant 3.0 at the salvage yard that so far appiers to be good. it is going in to the machine shop by the weekend to be double checked. wile doing some digging for parts people keep asking me if this is an lx motor or not which is what brings me to ask the questions. the serial number on the new motor is 6692291 (that is on both the rocker cover and the stamped tag at the transome end of the motor) i do not have the serial number off of my old motor. it SHOULD be an 88 model as that is hte year of the boat.

many thanks for all that help htat i have gotten for all of you as it has helped greatly

Actually, it's a 1984 model 140. and not a 3.0L. The 3.0l designation didn't start until 87, and the first 3.0LX didn't come out until 90.

Re: lx vs. non lx 3.0

It's a 3 liter displacement engine (or 181CI) but as Dons said, the 3.0L designation wasn't used until 87.

If I'm not mistaken (might be, correct me if I'm wrong) there were several changes along with the 3.0L designation, 1 piece rear main seal, 14" flywheel, etc, etc.

What year was your cracked engine? There were changes in 4 cylinder GM marine engines, through out the years, that make some swaps difficult (carb, manifold, head, flywheel, coupler, starter, etc.)

Re: lx vs. non lx 3.0

my boat and current motor are 1987. both the head and block are crack internally and block externaly just below the head so every thing there is a total loss. it was this way when i bought it i was just hoping that it was just external and i could get it fixed. i came across the motor in question at a recycling center as so far what i can tell the only thing that was aronge with it is that it would only turn 1/4 turn then stop which turned out to be a rust ring in one of the cyulenders. the block head crank and everything in going to the machine shop by end of the week to be checked out with better eyes. my plan was to use my churrent manifold and carb and all accessories use the now "new" motor and head which should bolt up from what i can tell the only thing that i have found differant is that the motor in the boat has bolt only to hold manifold on and the "new" motor had 2 studs and the rest bolts. i have called a couple places to get gaskets for it and they asked me if this was a "LX" motor or not and that is what made me start this thread
