Lures that are easy for kids to use?

My older two boys (8 and 6 years old) want to start using lures more like dad does, instead of night crawlers.

I want to give them lures that that are easy for them to use and don't require a huge amount of skill or dexterity so they don't get frustrated. I'm think of topwater lures like the tiny torpedo or floating rapala's.

Any thoughts or ideas?

Rattle traps are the easiest thing going. Just cast and retrieve then quickly. Spinner baits are similar and less likely to end up lodged in the back of your head. Chatter baits are another option. I mention these first because there is no finesse required whatsoever, just cast and retrieve.

If you are in heavy cover then maybe topwater with a scum frog. It's hard to set the hook (you have to overcome the urge to set the hook for a second or 2) but the are very difficult to snag up on weeds.

The way you worded the question is confusing, you said you don't want them to hav lures that are easy to use. I can only assume that you mean that you do, and you don't want them to get frustrated.

Rubber Swimming shad are working well in Cape Cod for blues and stripers. If you are fishing salt water give them a try.

Plastic worms, rubber grubs, spoons, castmasters...they should work

What are you fishing for?

I started my kid on floating lures, so I didn't have to worry about him letting the lure sink into snags. It's more fun for them if they can see the lure, opposed to have it sink out of view. Something like an ol' school jitter bug is fun, doesn't get fished much and still works. Pick up a bunch of cheap lures out of the $1 bin and let them go to town. (Funny thing about those $1 lures, I have some that work just as well, catch as many fish, as the $5-10 lures...)

If you are fishing for big predators, bass, pike, a tandem bass spinner works great since it's weedless and the hook is guarded, you don't have a bunch of treble hooks swinging around.

Sorry about that, I put an extra word in that sentence (corrected now).

What exactly is a chatter bait?

Thanks for all the suggestions so far everyone! :)

Inline spinners like the 1/8 oz. Roostertail on ultra light spinning tackle will slaughter the Bluegills, Perch, Bass, Pike, and Pickeral. Just cast them out and reel them back in. My 2 favorite colors are green with the gold spinner and white with the silver spinner.

Black rubber worms w/weedless hook that has wire snap over barb . They can throw it anywhere and retrive on botton . top water . Won't be loseing or snaging and you will have time to fish . 4 of mine learned this way and 4 grand kids will too untill they can drive boat for me and I can troll . Besides pulling Hook rather than hooks out of kids is always easier.Sometimes they caught more or bigger fish and wished I'd put on blk/prp worm .

Beetle Spin. Less then a buck, and catches all kinds of fish.

I think a small popper ,like the small rebell,or for bigginers I rig a small rapalla backwards so you can run it on the surface, anyway remember to pinch off all the barbs on the hooks incase someone gets hooked accidentally.or try a zoom 4" lizzard with a 1/32 ounce bullet weight, with size 0/1 worm hook.with 6lb mono?

A chatter bait works just like a crank bait except instead of a lip there is a flat piece of metal that vibrates strongly (like the lip but different). With a crankbait the lip drives the bait down to a certain depth and where is sometimes a rattle added for sound. With a chatter bait the metal is more to put vibrations through the water based on the lateral lines concept where fish since vibration.

Chatter baits can be retrieved slower and still put off one heck of a vibration. They do pretty well going through weeds as well.

This is my suggestion too. $1.49 up here and catches quite an array of fish.

You can take the soft body off after awhile and slide a 2" or 3" scented grub body on for better action too. (cant go wrong with pumpkinseed color)

Also, you could let them throw quarter oz Bomber Square As. They only dive 3 feet max, and SLAY the bass.

If you want easy for the kids, then anything topwater should do. the kids could pop a popper all day long and not get snagged. buzzbaits dont get snagged if you dont let them sink and are a heck of a lotta fun. spinnerbaits dont get snagged and produce fish, just cast and retrieve. maybe bounce a tube jig off the bottom, a little harder and might get snagged but not as much as other lures do.
