Well today is the day we have to put our boxer to sleep. She has been a great companion for the last 9 1/2 years. Unfortunately she contracted cancer a few years ago. It seems as though the disease is finally going to be too much for her to deal. with.
We decided not to put her through the surgeries and such when the vet asked, as most people I knew who chose that route seemed to be saying goodbye to their friends within 6 months. Lucy has made 3 years with the cancer. Our thought was when she begins to show signs of suffering we will make the last decision.
She has had a fine life for a dog. Living in the country she had lots of room to run, she got to romp around my favorite hunting grounds, loved to go to our lake for swimming, got to swim in the ocean in FL she has traveled quite a bit with us.
Chased an intruder out of the house for us once.
She was a bit strange, love to taste everything, including gear lube from my truck and even sticking her nose into the concrete when I poured my garage floor.

definitely going to miss her.

Sorry for you loss. May Lucy live on in your hearts and memories forever. and remember............

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

thanks guys. even knowing it was the right thing to do, doesn't make it easier.

our other two dogs will be lost now without their timekeeper. 7 PM is snack time and Lucy was right there to remind us every night.

No words ever help but ........

It is sad to say goodbye and I feel for you.........If she had a life like my and most all ppl's pets, you gave her the best life she could have ever wanted + 1,000,000's!!

Sometimes making that choice for her is best. One of life's hardest things to do for sure is to not let an animal suffer and you've done the right thing.

Lucy's memories will live with your family forever. Even though my kids are only teens/early 20's, we always enjoy talking about our pets that have gone on before us. Cycle of life. God bless Lucy and your whole family
