I first have to say that I am from northern Minnesota so a big bass around here is 5 lbs. Alot of places that isnt much but here a 5 pounder is pretty darn good.

The last couple of years we have started casting daredevils for large mouth bass and have had great luck. Summer of 2002 we pulled in a 7 lb 9 oz large mouth and four around 5 LBers. Our state record is 8 lb 8 oz I believe so the 7-9 was awesome. Summer of 2003 we pulled seven 5+ LBers. I never really used daredevils until 02 and now I think I have about 30 of them in my tackle box. The best ones we have found are 3 inch john deere green with yellow stripe and yellow with orange spots. Red and white collect alot too but northers chase them too much to catch as many bass. Try a daredevil and LMK how they work in your area.

Cory Nelson

Hey nascarcollector24. Never would have thought of using a daredevil for bass. I too am from Minnesota and fish around the Tayler Falls area. I am going to get a couple of those daredevils and give them a try next spring. Do you troll or cast with them. I like using the beetle spin. It is a great multi species lure. When you use the daredevil do you cast or troll with it? I catch most of my bass near shore or on weed lines.

Interesting, I will have to try it here in Pa. come next spring. I also am wondering how you fish it. Are you just using it as you would a normal in-line spinner. I am thinking it would be a good lure for a stop and go retrieve being as how those spoons have a great flutter action when they fall. The few times I did use those it seemed to like to twist line even when rigged with a swivel.

First let me welcome you here Nascar..I know where your at cause I go through Bagley every year when I head to the homestead just Outside of Walker on SteamBoat Lake..

Since I normally fish for the Muskie or Northerns I sometimes catch Some nice Bass casting with a spoon (len Thompson #3) while looking for some grays..I use a thinner spoon because of the weed beds I'm usually in and the thumper action commotion it creates when coming in..

Many lakes up North offer some excellant Bass fishn but few seriously go after them preferring the Gator or the Eyes..

You may see Neaumanns(Pequot lakes area) on here once in a while. He and I met last year for a day of fishn..If ya got some time in June may want to join us one day for some fishn..

Welcome Abored Neighbor, Sounds like you have the Bass Pegged. I would have to guess that the Daredevil would make any self respecting Minnosota anglers list of all time favorite lure's. I have never tried the green and yellow but after hearing you say it I'll bet that it looks a lot like a frog on the menu to the bass. I'll be sure to try it next year, as casting a daredevil ranks right up there with going after Sunnys for a garanted day of fun.

And if June don't work perhaps any time you make it towards Whitefish Chain we could get the pontoon out for a few hours.

When I was a kid in upstate NY, all I threw was a 3" red and white daredevil. I caught Northern's, largemouth and smallmouth, and walleye. To be honest, I haven't used one in probably 15-20 years, but I used to catch a whole lot of fish using them. I just may have to try some retro-fishing.

I think the Eppinger Daredevl has been around for something like 100 years or so. I've caught a lot of fish of a lot of species on them.

I think the minimum kit of lures for all fresh or saltwater predatory species would have to have Daredevls in a variety of sizes.

Around here if you're having a rough day out on the lake more often than not the daredevil will produce. I have caught everything from perch to northerns using the simple red and white combinations. They work well simple cast and retrieve, trolling and even in deeper holes with a jig like action.
