Helping a friend install a new lower shift cable for his MR Drive. It is a QuickSilver cable with the plastic sheath on the inner cable. The rather useless instructions that came with it does not say one way or another. Is any kind of lube a good idea or not?
On another note, it seems that the iboats parts search is also rather useless. You'd think that you would be able to put in (MR/Alpha1 shift cable) and have it come up with the choices. It does not. It comes back, no results found. I can do a google search, using the same description and come up with endless choices.
His original steel cable core would have been very usable once the two tiny rust spots were broken loose by lightly whacking the end of the cable from the outdrive end. We wanted to pull the core out to lube it but the tip of the core was destroyed by removing the buckle at the top end of the cable. We had to drill the set screws out to get the buckle to release. This ruined the wrap at the tip of the core so it could not be pulled down thru the outer housing,. This would have also been very disappointing if all one was trying to was to remove the cable to replace the shift cable boot.
Another thing I do not understand is the need to re-tap the hole in the bell housing with a straight thread tap. The fitting on the cable is still a tapered pipe thread. We just cleaned out the hole by running a standard tapered pipe tap about three quarters of the way in and the cable fitting went in with ease and snugged right down.
