Lubing gimbal bearing in DP-S without outdrive removal? Or removal instructs?

Hello,

First post here, so please bear with me. I searched for about 1 hr and could not find my answers, though it may be perhaps because I do not know much of the jargon. I've put my question in list form in case it helps; #1 would really be the most helpful one.

1) I would like to lube the gimbal bearing using the zerk fitting, but it is so close to the hull (and pointed towards the hull) that I cannot access the nipple with a conventional grease gun. Has anyone here come up with a creative way to do this?

2) If not, I'm afraid of removing the outdrive without supervision. I've searched here and cannot find a link discussing how to do this. Can someone provide?

3) speaking of searches, what am I doing wrong on this site? In this VP forum, I can type "DP-S" into the search thread and it returns no hits, either on the search posts or search threads options. What am I doing wrong? I would like to be as self-sufficient as possible.

4) I actually have the VP shop manual for "DP-S Drive Unit and Transom Shield". It says the outdrive must be removed to lube the bearing, but doesn't say how. Elsewhere on this site I am directed to the VP site for servcie downloads, but cannot find a choice on there for outdrive manuals, just engine manuals (http://www.volvopenta.com/volvopent...lication_search/pages/publication_search.aspx)

5) The prior owner wrote down these numbers for the outdrive in the log book:
DP-S 1.95 (M 22)
4112028495
3868164

I do not know what each means, besides the DP-S being the outdrive type. Is the M 22 a subspecies?

My engine type is a 5.7 GI

Thanks very much for the help.

You can't grease the gimbal bearing even with the drive off. Get a hose or an angled grease fitting for your grease gun.

You should still be removing the outdrive yearly to grease the coupler splines and checking the alignment.
Do you have the OEM service manual for the drive? or do you have a Seloc or Clymers? There is a section in the OEM service manual on removing and installing the drive and adjusting the shift cable.

The manuals in the link you posted is for owners manuals only, not service manuals.
What is the full model number of your engine? There are about 30 different models

PS, the search feature on this site is a joke.

Hi Don,

The former owner had these numbers written down for the engine:
Volvo Penta 5.7 GI PNCACE (SP?)
4110132982 3868429

The answer about the gimbal bearing confuses me a little. If I can't grease it even with the drive off, then what would a grease gun hose or angled fitting do? And what is the zerk even for then?

I have a bunch of OEM manuals marked "workshop manuals"' are these different from "service manuals"? I do not have a Clymers or Seloc.

Is there a thread that covers removal of the outdrive?

There isn't a thread for R&R of the drive, but section 6 of the OEM manual explains in detail how to do it.
Workshop manual/service manual is the same thing. Should be manual # 7788881 (in the upper right of the manual) for your drive.

The grease zerk on the right side of the transom shield is how you grease the gimbal bearing. The reason for the hose or angled fitting is so you can get to that zirk on the outside to grease it.
Don't forget, only you can see why you can't get to it, we can't.

The reason you pull the drive is to grease the coupler splines (not the gimbal bearing) and those splines are a lot more important than the gimbal bearing. When those coupler splines wear out from lack of grease, you have to remove the engine to replace it.

Hi all, i have been reading the posts about greasing the splines and bearing. My question is does it take a special kind of grease to do this or you everyday ball joint, tie rod type of grease found in auto parts store??

p.s. your posts are very helpful to us beginners.

You need to start a new thread of your own when you have a question. No hijack someone elses thread.
