I'm finally going to polish job on Boomyal Jr's '87 Sunbird. That's the one we painted, in the garage, with the color/clear combo. I don't think I applied the paint as generously as I should have so I'm sure that I'll have to be extra careful.

I'm not trying to make a show car out of it but I want to bring out a bit better shine.

I have obtained some 3M Super Duty Rubbing Compound for the job. I will be using a 7" 300-3000 rpm polisher.

Do ya have any advice for me?

Because you have a posable light amount of clear, the superduty is too abrasive. If you color sand with 1500-2000 wet paper, you can polish with finesse-it II 05928. Use a wool pad to start, then switch to a foam one to finish. Put masking tape along the edges.

Follow LD's advice, its exactly what my brother and dad do. Advice I can give is don't stay in one spot at all, it'll "burn" the clear. Wet sand in straight strokes, not the circlular pattern that you would think you would use. A touch of dish soap in your sanding water, keeping the paper and surface very wet, and keeping the paper clean are also essential. Be prepared to get extremely messy.

Keep the RPM of the polishing mop as low as possible.

At what point do I switch to the foam pad?
