I usaully do the lube at the end of every season, Oct or Nov. The line is generally on a as needed basis. Sometimes I'm in lakes where I get snagged more and that added stress leads me to changing lines, also if I do more trolling I tend to change it more frequently.

I take down and lube my baitcasters at the end
of each ice fishing season when I change the
reals from the ice rods to regular rods. Usually
I dont have to change line unless I get snagged
and stretch the line or if it gets abrasions on
it.As long as I dont leave the line in direct
sun light for long periods the line will last
a very long time.

I suppose it all depends on how much you use them. I lube my spinning reals at the end of the season as they dont get used that much. I lube my baitcasters sometime three times a season. I can tell when they need lubed as you start to feel the difference.

Ive concocted my own mix for the grease, and use Tri-Flow for oil!

At least once, but up to three times a year. I break down my open face spinners and clean and oil them. Then I clean the rods and pay special attention to the eyelets. It always amazes me how much farther I can cast after cleaning my rigs.

I would have to say that the average recreational fisherman NEVER lubes his equipemnt. I carry a little kit in my boat just for this, and some extra line in the same box, I dont know how many times I have invited someone fishing only to find that there equipment isnt up to a full days fishing. Bails wont flip, line is old, or just plain gumbed up. Now I have some people bringing there reels to me in the fall to go through them. They see the advantage of having there equipment working properly.

I spend more than 100 days a year with rod in
hand. As long as you don't abuse your equipment,
and assuming you have more than one fishing rod.
One cleaning and oiling per year should keep
your equipment in excellent shape. Works well
for me the last 30 odd years.
