Re: lower unit

That is part of the reverse lock mechanism.----When it shifts to reverse it locks the motor down so it does not kick up.----------If mechanisms are not operating smoothly then damage results.

Re: lower unit

Thanks oldman570 and with this type of motor when shifting should it be quick swift into reverse or slow shift into reverse and forward as it tends to grind when shifting into reverse.

Always shift with a quick firm motion !-----Both forward and reverse.

Re: lower unit

Merc calls that beat up plastic piece a cam. The reverse lock rod is supposed to move up and down following the contours of the cam, and the reverse lock hooks grab a rod locking the motor in the vertical position. When shifter to forward, the lock is released.

Re: lower unit

If this engine is still the 402 you have discussed in previous threads, here is the parts list for s/n 7038943:

MERC 402 - Mercury, Mercruiser, Force, etc. Parts Lookup

Under GEAR HOUSING ASSEMBLY, COMPLETE (PAGE 1), see item 43, 43308T1 CAM. Click on the picture of the cam and it will blow it up for you so you can see what a new one looks like.
