i bought a used lower unit for my 1973 50 hp johnson and when the shifter is pushed in the foward position the boat goes backwards when the shifter is pulled back in the reverse position the boat goes foward did they make a reverse direction gear box for this model ? everything i have read on the internet they did not make a reverse gear box for this it's a 13 spline prop shaft thanks steve

During the 1970's some models had gearcases that engaged forward gear by raising the shift rod and some by lowering the shift rod. You have to have the gearcase that matches the shift linkage on your engine.

All of the controls work the same, it's the lower unit and the linkage at the engine that is different.
