lower unit ?

i have a 1985 merc 150 and the prop shaft can be pulled in and out about a 1/8 to1/4 inch is this normal?

Yep... check oil to see if it has silver/water/greyish look to it or has metallic particles in it. Real fine metal is ok (wont stick ya when rubbed between fingers). If any of the above check the unit over...
