hey quys, i have a 96 johnson 225 ocean runner and i just bought a lower unit from a guy. i need to put my old shift rod, water pump, and shaft (drive shaft) into the new unit. is this something i could do myself? i'm pretty good with a wrench, but i have never done this before. any suggestions? thanks

Re: lower unit tear down

It takes a couple of special tools. Special wrench for the nut on the driveshaft below the pinion gear, some very large and long inside snap ring pliers and a puller for the bearing carrier

take it to a BRP dealer, the two piece shaft can be replaced without a teardown.
ya just need the collar that locks on the shaft to remove it.
if you replace the lower driveshaft you will also need the shim bar assy to reshim it to the new case.
I have ron's marine in portsmouth Va do a few here and there.
