lower unit swap

I need to know if these lowers will swap the first one is a 1958 mark 55? (not 100% on this ones year the numbers on the plate show its the right year but it looks to be factory black but from what I can tell they didnt use black for these years) and the other is a 1960 merc 400S looking at them everything looks right

I can't tell you if it will fit, but based on my swap, let me give you some things to look for. Measure the shaft length, count the shaft splines, note if you have a pin on top of the shaft or not, note if it has a whole on the leading edge of the unit to let water in for a speedometer. If all of that is the same, maybe it will fit. For those guys who know these things, look at the model number in the casting near the water pump on each, someone will be able to tell you if they swap.

Sorry no real answer, but maybe this will help you rule in or out before going further.
