The pressure side of the seal only holds the oil in the gearcase. Did you do a vacumn test?

no the boat was not in gear and I don't have the equiptment to do a vacumn test my friend at a marina will have the equiptment next week do you reccomend that I also do a vacumn test or put mufflers on and run it in gear. I cant run it in gear in the water as it was a window of opportunity and seems that by tommorrow evening the ramp will certainly be frozen.

miloman,

Clanton is correct. You need to perform pressure and vacuum tests. These are two different dynamics.

Yes, get it vacuum tested. If it holds both ways, you're good to go.

miloman,

The vac. test is just reversed of pressure. You can buy a hand vac. pump at an auto parts store for just a few $$$.
