I am rebuilding my 1976 35 Evinrude. I can reasemble the two balls, spring and clutch dog by hand but I am figuring that the notch in the OMC tool must be there to do the proper allinging. I know that R.Johnson said that you may be able to make this sleve tool. But I am wondering on this small of a lower unit if it could be done by hand. I did it once easilly enough but did not know how to mesh the gears right on the prop shaft.

Can anybody teel me how to do this without the special tool? Or where to find this tool if needed?

Thnaks

You need this sleeve, or tool to get the prop shaft in. You could order this tool thru a dealer, the part no. is 328081. Even with this tool, don't have children in the shop when you go to use it.Your going to say some things! I made my own tool because a wanted it to a closer tolerance to over come the difficulty in using it, but I have a lathe to do that.

R.Johnson

What is the main use of the tool? To alline the gears a certain way or just to keep the balls and spring compressed to slide on the clutch dog?

If I am able to slip the clutch dog over the spring and balls by compressing the two balls with my index finger and thumb is my spring bad?

Thnaks

Mike

The sleeve keeps the balls, and spring in place in the prop shaft so that in can be guided into the shift dog. The shift dog with it's lever, and cradle must be but in place first, and held by it's pivot screw. In use, You turn the forward gear until the lug's on the dog rest on the lug's of the gear. The prop shaft, and sleeve are then guided in place, and the sleeve is held tightly against the dog. You rap the prop shaft with a plastic hammer, and the balls go into there seat in the dog. Sounds simple does'nt it! Your detent spring is OK.
