I have a mid 80's 75hp Johnson. I pulled the lower unit to check the impellor. Now I'm trying to get it re-assembled. How does one get the shift rod to stay perfectly in align so it goes through the little connector at the top of the engine (well bottom I guess). Rod always wants to turn on me. I have done this once before and I remember it being a pain. Was wondering if there was some good trick to it. Thanks in advance.

It helps to fish a string down through and tie it to the rod. Have someone help pull the string as you raise the lower unit into place.

put the shifter in the reverse position, and on the lower unit push the shift rod down. when you install the lower there should be a gap between the two shift rods align them then use the shifter on the motor to move the upper shift rod down while alining the two.Walla.
I am not sure if the upper should be in reverse or forward.Just watch it and have it in its upper most travel, the lower in its furthest down position.

Thanks guys. I think I got it last time like dew2 described. That's how I'll try this go around. I knew there was some trick... that should do it.
