I have a 1990 90hp Evinrude. I am very mechanicaly inclined but have never worked on a L.U. before. Is changing the seals something I can do myself? Or am I asking for trouble.???

Re: Lower unit seals

are you postive you need to break it open, did you replace the washers on the drain and vent plugs, one of the most common places for water intrusion.

There's not much to doing an LU . . . IF you have all the tools you need. You might get a quote from a shop, then price out any tools you'd need to buy and figure it out that way. I'm not familiar with that particular year, so I don't know if you'll need any pullers or the like. You will certainly need a giant herkin' pair of snap-ring pliers.

Thank You for the information. I have winterized it already, but in the spring I will first change over the screws and washers and see if that is what the problem is before undergoing a tear down of the L.U.

Thanks Estoman

You could invest in a pressure-vacuum tester off of Ebay for about 40 bucks.
Makes it easy to track down leaks.....
