lower unit seals?

Ok, I did a search, but did not turn up anything. Please forgive me - I'm sure this question has been asked before.

I bought a 1983 Johnson 15hp last year - changed the lower unit oil right away, and it was milky. Not good. Drained the oil the other day and it was milky again. Now I'm worried - I bought new gaskets for the oil plugs, hoping against hope that that is the problem. Are there any other seals besides the prop seal area that I should be worried about? Is this a job I can do myself? If I have a shop do it for me, can anyone give me a ballpark dollar range for the repair?

Thanks alot!!

Rich

Re: lower unit seals?

Hi richstick,

Yes you do have another seal around the shaft at the impeller housing that could allow water to enter. But have you inspected the casing for cracks?

If you've ever successfully work on your car engine, then you should be able to handle the task of rebuilding your lower unit. Also, get a manual for your motor.

Most techs at your local marine supply are happy to give you advice when your buying your parts from them.

Hope this helps a bit.

There are typically three seal areas: prop shaft (usually two seals back to back, drive shaft and shift shaft. Pressure and vacuum test to find where the leak(s) are. Repair cost depends on whether motor has ever run in salt water, etc. If you want to DIY, get a shop manual (OEM) and parts list first.
