Lower unit seal replacement question

I just talked to a marine dealer about my lower unit. I told him that I had found some water when I drained the lube from it. He indicated that I would need a seal kit for my lower unit in addition to a new impeller. He also indicated that there's no way for me to replace these seals myself. I'm on a tight budget and really need to do whatever I can myself. I have a 69' Merc 500 serial number 2516583. Does anyone know what special tools I might need and whether or not they might be available to rent? I'm very comfortable working on things, but just haven't had that much experience with outboards. I can and have replaced the impeller before, just not sure about what I would need to do to replace these seals. Thanks for any advice or help.

Re: Lower unit seal replacement question

You can replace the seals your self and it is not that hard.First get your hands on a manual, your local library should have one that you can check or copy, then it is a simple mater of removing the lower unit just like you did when you replaced the water pump impeller. Only now you must remove the water pump housing and the drive shaft and pry the seal out. It is in the case where the drive shaft enters the gear case. You will need a seal driver to drive the new seal back in to keep from damaging it. If you don't have a seal driver, I have used a socket of the same size as the outside of the seal and that works well. be sure to lube the lip of the seal before reassembly.

yeah, my main concern is replacing the prop shaft seals. Anyone have any tips on whats involved in replacing these seals? Like I said, I'm new to outboards but unless there's some wierd trick to it, I don't have any problem replacing your average seal. Thanks again guys.
