After finding the cause of my "ticking" noise........damaged gears and clutch.

I took off the lower unit, and now I have 3 problems (questions).

1) How do I get the Pinion gear off of the drive shaft? I took the nut off below the pinion gear. It looks like the gear is a "splined" fit onto the shaft. I tried to just pull the shaft out of the housing but it does not want to come loose. I did not want to get too ruff by hitting on the housing......if this is not how it comes apart. I also hit on the pinion gear using a big screwdriver, to see if this would loosen the gear and it would "fall" off the end of the shaft. I tried to force a screwdriver on the top side of the pinion gear to see if this would cause the gear to slide off the shaft. The gear appears to be ?stuck???

What do I need to do?

2) Inside the Carrier assembly there are a couple of seals and a needle bearing that I would like to change but not sure what is the best way to get them out. If I take out the 2 seals [using a screwdriver/pliers] to ?rip? them out, would the gear then easily slide out? Would I have to knock the old bearings out??then how do I install the new bearings?

3) Another question??the reverse gear has a ball bearing ?attached? to it. This appears to be a ?shrink? fit. How would you suggest I put the new gear and bearing together? My thoughts would be to put the bearing in the kitchen oven and heat it up to ~ 500 deg and see if it would slip onto the gear when hot. I could heat it up using my Coleman cook stove??? Or?..would an auto parts store be able to do this for me?

Re: Lower unit repair ? 40 hp Force

Gerald;

1. Clamp the driveshaft in a vice with lead plates or some other type of protection for the shaft, supporting the gear housing at the other end and then with a block of wood across the top of the housing, tap the wood to drive the housing off the shaft. Normally does not take much to get the pinion gear to slide off the splines

2. For the carrier, if I remember, I had a piece of broomstick that I could slide in through the seals and needle brg and tap the gear and bearing out. You can also heat the outside of the carrier with a heat gun or hair dryer to make it easier. Then if you need to replace the brg, use a brg splitter. Then, the seals and needle bearing are easy to tap out from the inside.

3. For the brg/rev gear assy, I just put the gear in the freezer overnight and when I am ready to install the bearing, just heat the brg with a heat gun or hair dryer, pull the gear out of the freezer and it usually drops right on. Quickly give it a light tap on the inner race of the brg with a matching size socket to make sure it is fully seated. The I dump the brg/gear assy in a can of oil to prevent the beginning of any corrosion points on the bearing while the gear thaws.
