lower unit removal

1972 evenrude<br />MDL#65273S<br />SER#J017641<br />Triumph 65 hp<br />Elec.shift<br /><br />when removing the lower unit for water pump replacement can the electric shift wires be disconnected at the case seperation of the lower unit? :confused: :confused: The manuel showes discon at the power head connect point.<br /> seem's it would save a little hassel if wires can be discon when removing lower unit --at-- the lower unit.<br /> Thanks in advance

Disconnect from up above at powerhead. Tie a string on and pull the string through with the wire. When reinstalling retie and pull the string to help guide the wires back through to top. Dont cut the wires, its just about impossible to splice them due to the way they are situated in the insulation.

Excellent tip Waterbug. It is an old electricians trick that works well for house re-wiring too. Tie the new wires to the old, then the new get pulled when the old are pulled out.
