Lower unit on my '75 50 hp had milky oil after new o rings on oil fill/drain bolts. Need to replace the o rings in unit. I may do job myself, however I have no special tools called for in manual. Am I better off having local johnson mechanic replace seals, and if so, how much does a job like that cost (assuming all gear parts are OK)?
Thanks

Medic
If your gonna buy the tools to do this once, invest the money in your local mechanic to save the headaches and help your local economy. Also a complete teardown and rebuild is not for the timid. Also your mech can better gage the useful life of the wear parts to determine if replacement is necessary. Depending on your location and how much needs replacing.....I would hazard a guess of $200 for a simple seal replacement to $500+ for seals, pump, clutch dog,etc.. kinda job.
Good luck
PS If your gonna do it, get it in soon before the early April rush. Compression looks great!!
