What could it mean if a found quit a bit of metal shavings on the top screw of my lower unit, and a little but on the bottom screw? Also the color of the oil was almost black and and a milky color mixed in in alomost swirls.

usually indicates the top bearing is failing.
may be worth a reseal to inspect all the gears and bearings.
the black color indicates its burned usually. you may need to adjust your maint schedule

Small amount of filings is normal. Some milkyness indicates some water.I would change the oil and take it out a couple of times and then check it again. Some folks run with leaky seals if they're not too bad and just change oil more often.

Re: Lower unit question?

I just changed my lower unit oil. i bought it this past June and it sat out a season a think atleast 6 months. I should have changed it before I too it out this season. I for got to chage my washers on the screws I will probably replace them this spring when I take it back out as well as add more fluid for what comes out when I take the screw out. Does this sound like it will work? What would cause the burnt oil though?

MCF...how much is quite a bit of shavings? Little flakes is normal...were the shavings long and thin?

Yes they were thin, but they were short. My entire screw tip was covered with them. Then after I filled up with new oil I turned engine over couple times and took top screw back out to make sure it was topped off and found a little bit more shavings but not a whole lot.
