2000 130 johny,large v/6 gearcase.
Dhadley(or anyone else),this is a theory of mine with a problem, tell me what you think.During the last few trips last season I started getting a gear noise that I could hear when I slowed down rapidly, not a whinning but more like a ratheting noise.I drained the oil and found normal glitter, but also a few very thin flakes on the magnet(no water also),so I pulled the carrier to take a peek and to my suprise everything looked fine, forward and reverse gears look like new and the pinion gear good to but does have a more polished look to it(the case was also very clean,no more metal fragments). Now the one thing that I found was that the water pump impeller had seized to the driveshaft(a ***** to get loose).Correct me if Im wrong, the driveshaft does have vertical play about1/8 inch, this is normal part of the pinion gear shimming process.I guess cyntrifical force pushes the pinion gear upward until the shims make contact with the upper bearing carrier, now if my impeller was frozen it would not allow my driveshaft to come up all the way(impeller has to float on the driveshaft?)and gear clearance would be incorrect causing noise?Boat goes in in a couple weeks, and Im hoping my theory is correct.Well what do you think!

that ratcheting noise is cause the propis ratchiting the dog bacwards. mercs and yams do it as well. usually indicates a cable or shift lever bushing problem on a jonny. the pressure of the bevel gears trying to forsce themselves apart holds the upper drive bearing to the thrust washer. that is why sometimes you can hear it slap at in gear idle. usually indicates an engine miss when you can hear it on a jonny.
if your impeller is siezed to the shaft maybe you need a shorter maint intravel. wish I had a dollar for every jonny impeller I cut off.

Thanks,Im gonna double check my linkage and shift shaft height but I dont think they are the cause. The noise is very hard to explain, but if you had the lower unit on a bench with the water pump removed in neutral position and spun the driveshaft by hand(clockwise of course)you tend to get the noise Im talking about. If you spin the shaft and apply upward pressure at the same time its smooth and quiet

If it only happens when you back down hard I think its the water spinning the blades faster than the motor is currently running. you will here the same noise if you shut off the engine while in gear and coasting along in the water.
Just my theory is all, I could be all wet!!
If I am right then its a fairly normal sound I have herd it on my suzuki140. dave.

How can water rushing by spin the prop faster than the engine if it is in gear? The only way I see it is if the clutchdog and engagement lugs on the gear itself were very worn out, neither of which show any faults in my case.Anyone?

season "I started getting a gear noise that I could hear when I slowed down rapidly, not a whinning but more like a" cause by your own admission the crankshaft and boat are slowing down which now means the prop is trying to rotate the boat or the propshaft. what the ell ya think happens when ya drag an inclined plane through the ater? acts like a windmill. but think as ya wish. I only have seen this once, then on the scifi channel.
I am done :)
