Lower Unit Problem

The shift rod needs to be replaced. It looks like the prior owner tried to cut it. I have the gearcase separated and in my garage. The bearing carrier, reverse gear, snap rings and washers are all out. In order for me to push or pull on the shift rod I need to use vise grips, it won?t budge by hand. I want to inspect the shifter housing, shaft, cradle etc., but the clutch dog does not move forward enough for me to remove the nut off the driveshaft when I push on the shift rod to put it in gear. I can loosen the pinion nut but not get it off.
Am I missing something?

It's just a guess, but try revolving the driveshaft clockwise when trying to get the clutch dog to move. Perhaps the "ears" are hitting against the corresponding ears of the gear.

As I understand it, you remove the bolts from the driveshaft bearing housing and remove the drive shaft once you get the nut loose. The shaft is a taper fit into the pinion and may require force to pop it out.

Thanks. I wouldn't even be trying to get the driveshaft out except for the shift rod not moving easily.
Any ideas on what I should be looking for once everything is out.
