Engine wouldnt go into gear, so I dismantled the lower unit. The lower shift rod is bent at the bottom.
I also noticed the pinion gear is worn, but the forward and reverse seem good apart from a few small chips.
Clutch dog is good on forward side, but has very slightly rounded edges on the reverse side.

Does anyone know what may have caused this?
Is it necessary to replace the forward and reverse gear if there are only a few small chips?
Would slight rounding of the Dog cause problems engaging reverse?

Yamaha 60, 1996, 3 CYL

Re: Lower Unit problem

This is normally caused by shifting into gear with the idle set too high. These small chips will never repair themselves, only grow into big ones. You should replace the gears. Maybe on the shifter dog.

Re: Lower Unit problem

a bent shift rod is almost always the result of shifting gears with the engine off . if the propshaft or drive shaft is not rotating its possible to destry the shift mechanism if shifted.
good luck and its time for gears.

Re: Lower Unit problem

But shifting gears with the engine off is a neccessity for starting and transporting in forward and neutral. Just do it gently and dont force it.

Re: Lower Unit problem

Thanks guys. I've just put the parts on order.

I have a good manual but it doesn't have good detail on reinstalling the Shifter/cam/Rod. I didn't disassemble the unit so I have one further question.
After I install the Shifter to the drive shaft and clutch dog assembly(in the neutral positions), do I simply drop in the Shift Rod with the cam already attached from the topside?
Is this simple, or is there any tips or advice to get it in?

Also, the cam has a kind of rippled half moon shape. Does the flatter side of this face into the clutch dog shifter or the "curved" side?

Re: Lower Unit problem

its best not to shift at all with the engine off.
I cant see why anyone would need to shift with the engine off anyway.
good luck and keep posting. I dont have my little motor manual here so I cant help on the cam arrangement
