Lower Unit Paint Job

I just finished a lower unit paint job and thought the information could be useful to someone. Here are some pics. I used Moeller Zinc Chromate primer(yellow) 1 Can, 1 can Tempo (Evinrude Sea Drive Silver 1983-1986) Part No. 020462, and 1 can Moeller Clear Coat.

I cleaned it up with a wire brush and simple green, sanded it down with 220,320,400 grit. Used the whole can of the primer on it, then started with the paint and used the entire can...plus a little more. Used #0000 steel wool between coats followed up by a tack cloth. Finished off with about 3 or 4 coats of clear. P.S. Don't try to use every last drop in the paint can...it isn't pretty. Also, the overspray with the yellow primer will leave a powder on everything, so cover up. I recommend a good respirator. I picked up a decent one from Wally World for $20 that worked well. Oh, and I purchased my paint from West Marine. www.westmarine.com

Hope this helps someone.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the good writeup on that. I'm going to be repainting a whole engine pretty soon, so this info will definately help me out. The end result looks very nice as well, well worth the time and effort.

No problem. I was satisified with the results so, I am going to be doing the entire engine. I might as well while I have everything apart for a rebuild. I just finished the lower engine cowl too.

Looks very nice!

I?m looking to do the same thing on the lower for my Johnnyrude 70, to get it back into proper Johnson status... Will verify thet the lower works properly first (only got a few hours on it before it got too cold). Your job looked great and helped me decide to do it myself, I guess as always the key is to take the time and be careful.

PS How do you distinguish between a Johnnyrude and an Evinson?

Great job and thanks for posting pictures and info. I will save this one for when I have time to pretty up my motor and LU.

by the way, the LU in the last picture of the original post seems to be suspended in mid-air, as if being held there by ghosts...or aliens. Is this a result of the paint fumes, or an elaborate hoax?

I appreciate the kudos. I am pretty sure that the cloud of fumes by the end of the job is the culprit to the mystery of the suspended LU. I felt suspended myself towards the end:D

Thought I would continue posting my paint progress under the same thread. Here is the midsection.
