Having a problem with my lower unit. It showed no early signs of trouble, but today it stuck in forward gear. I could put the control in neutral or reverse but was still in forward. It went into neutral once, then I did get it back into forward again to get to shore. Cable an all was fine......so checked the lower unit lube, (was changed in September and all was fine) now has water in it an steel filings on the plug magnet. I am a good mechanic but have not worked on boats much. I took the 4 forward bolts an 1 center back bolt out. I cannot seem to get the lower unit off. What else needs to come off b4 it will come out? Does anyone know where I could find a schematic breakdown without buying a manual?

I cannot see any breaks or cracks in the unit. What else could cause it to get water in it? Or should I just consider finding a used one?

Thanks

Silver

The trim tab bolt has to come out too. Disconnect the shift linkage clip or pin inside the motor housing. The shift rod "should drop out" with the lower unit.

Based on the fact your motor is 20+ years old and had been in a wet environment I suspect you will need rubber mallet assistance.

Once you are in there replace your impeller too...a good practice. Your water leakage is probaly due to 20+ year old seals and O rings.

I STRONGLY suggest you get the manual. The investment in the manual is cheaper that one hour labor rate by any mechanic.

Good luck.
Bob

Don't forget to change the nylon washers on the drain/oil-level plugs. They get hard and
smashed when they get old. Then they don't seat properly and are not water tight. If you didn't change them when you changed the fluid, I would highly suspect its your problem. If not you need a seal kit. Good luck.
