Does anyone know how much oil the lower unit holds on my 1973 65 HP. Mod 650 and also where I can purchase a lube pump. Have drained unit and oil is milky looking. Looks like about 6 to 8 ounces came out. Fiber washer under top plug in bad shape, possible water got in there but should'nt it have seperated from oil after sitting for a week.

Re: lower unit oil

my 78' 50hp merc takes about 12-13oz of oil and i purchased the oil and a pump at a local marine store, it's recommended by mercury to dissasemble the lower unit if there has been water in there, at least for thier techs

Re: lower unit oil

Get new gaskets and quart of lube and follow directions on pump lube kit. Screw it into the lower hole and pump lube until it comes out of the top, replace the top washer/screw, remove the pump from the bottom and replace the washer/screw. You will loose a small amout of lube which will leave a little expansion room.

put new gaskets/seals on the fill/vent screws. most common place for water to get in
