Lower Unit Oil Seals

I have a Merc I drive. I found lower unit from an old boat that was junked, the unit is in much better shape than mine (mine has cracked). I am transfering it over to my upper. <br /><br />My question is concerning the seals on the lower unit. Since it has been sitting for what looks like 5 years, I think the oil seals may all be shot.<br /><br />Can the propeller shaft oil seal be replaced without having to pull the whole thing apart? <br /><br />It looks as tho the only other seal I need is the water pump base oil seals for the vertical driveshaft. This leaves me with two seals to replace total and I will be ready to hit the water?

Sorry, that would be 4 seals. You have 2 seals, back-to-back in each location. In theory the propshaft seals can be replaced without a strip down, but I've never done it. Usually when the seals leak, I want to check for water damage inside.<br /><br />Chris............

yeah, i figured there would be that configuration. I wonder if anyone has done this.

Does anyone know if I can replace the prop shaft seals without pulling it apart?

you can try, just dont scar the shaft. omc made a tool for doing it on their units. you should also change the shift shaft seal as well. oneday when I get some time I will design and build one for yamaha and merc but so far I have not. one tool to pull the seal and another to install it.
