hello, new here.. first post, though i have browsed the forum for years.

i am looking for a used fishing boat. Today i tested a 17' SeaArk with a 1993, 90hp Nissan Oil Injected outboard. The motor ran very well and i was very happy with the boats performance. Everything was great until we were loading the boat and i noticed that the top oil plug on the lower unit was missing.

i don't know if it was there when we started, and maybe vibrated out... or if it was gone before hand.

the owner of the boat didn't know either, but he did recently change the lower unit oil. He said after he changed the oil he took the boat out one time.

i wanted to drain the lower unit right there to get a look at what was left of the lower unit oil....but the owner was hesitant to do that as we were at a public location without proper tools, etc. We had met at a neutral site and he is far from me so going back to either of our homes to do the wrenching was not a great option.

Assuming he 'forgot' to put the top plug back in after changing the lower unit oil.. and he ran it one day at the lake, and then i ran it for 45 minutes at another lake... both fresh water... how bad could it be? really bad?!? man... i wish i could get a look at that lower unit oil...

would i be a fool to buy this boat ?

Definitely change the LU lube. Likely full of water. May need to change it a few times to flush all the emulsificated oil out. If the gears are OK (probably), you should be fine.
