Hello,

I've just serviced my 115 HP 4cyl. Mercury, got new water pump, and serviced the lower unit, but when I checked the oil level, I removed the screw but no oil came out, I set the OB on plane with the tilt/trim so the oil would level.

Then I checked for the lower screw where the oil drains and let a bit out, the oil seems to be new but my doubt is if the service dealer put enough oil or if when you remove the level screw is it mandatory to see oil there?

If I don't get oil running thru the oil level screw should I replace and refill from the bottom until oil gets to the level and come out??

Please let me know as I don't want to trash my OB.

Thank you very much.

If the oil looked new and in good shape, simply put the bottom plug back in, remove the top plug again and fill the rest of the way up with quality lube until it starts to run out. Replace upper plug and you are good to go. Check it periodically between changes via the top plug and if none runs out again, just add lube until it does.

ego- you are correct. Fill from the botom until it comes out the top, replace top plug, remove fill adapter from bottom and quickly insert bottom plug. If you fill from top, it will begin to come out before it is full(air pockets).

My manual actually says to let a little oil out after filling from the bottom and seeing that it is full to allow for expansion. I never do it though.

No sensor for gearbox. Low oil alarm for engine oil.

Re: Lower unit oil --> Mercury '93 115 HP

Hello again !

I drained all the old oil, left the OB all night so it could be empty.

Started to refill from the bottom, first the oil went in ok, suddenly stoped, like if the deposit was full BUT no oil came out from the OIL LEVEL screw, I got nervous and decided to complete filling from the top.

Is that correct?
How exactly do you measure the oil level?
Do you remove the screw and wait for oil to come out?? or do you use something special?

My OB is a 1993 4cyl. 115HP Mercury, how much oil do I need for the gearcase?

Thank you very much. !!

Take both screws right out (and plastic seals).
If you keep squeezing, it will come out. There is nothing in there stopping it. The only issue with top filling is that there will be air bubbles that will displace the oil and you will have a bit less than full. This should not cause a problem, but when it settles, top it up. A 115 will take a couple of pints. When it starts ruuning out of the top, wait til bubbles stop and remove bottle and replace the seal and screw. by hand. Then replace the top seal and srew.
Look here...
http://www.brokeboats.com/lulube3.html
