Lower unit oil level

I drained my '87 force 50hp. Where do I refill it to. The hole just above the prop shaft, the top vent hole, or somewhere inbetween? Or does it just take a certain amount of oil, ie .5 qt or something?

Pull both the "fill" and "vent" plugs, ensure the gaskets are in good shape on both plugs, better to replace than guess, then fill slowly until the fluid comes out of the vent hole. Replace both plugs, wait about 15-20 mins, than recheck and top off if needed. Hope this makes sense...

Thats kinda what I thought. It just seemed that the vent hole was really close to the top of the unit. I was wondering about expansion and over filling. Thanks.

Make sure you fill it from the lower drain and push oil in till it comes out the vent hole.. Refit the vent and remove your pump or oil bottle from the drain and then fit the drain screw..
