How much lower unit oil does an 85hp Chrysler lower unit hold? I have 1 quart in the garage and walmart wants 12.95 for another quart. Not really feeling that price.

About 26 ounces depending upon year and lower unit. One quart is enough to do a complete fill and top-off.

But---Next time, why cheap out? Even at 12 bucks a year, how does that compare with a tank of gas?

While Wal-Mart is often the least expensive by brand, sometimes you can find other brand marine lower unit lube in auto stores for less money.

Drained my 85HP Force & got a little less than a Qt. out of it. How much does the lower unit hold? Till it comes out the over flow.:D

It takes just under a quart. I don't get the cost concern though. Outside of using a quality 2-stroke oil to mix in good gas, the lower unit lube is THE most important part of an outboard. I use the absolute best quality lubricants I can get my hands on. Amsoil Sabre or HP Injector oils for the gas and this one for the lower unit.....

I don't sell Amsoil or have any stake in them. I just really like their products. The gear lube can even handle some water contamination and still protect the lower unit. You should see the torture we put their motor oil and greases through in our inboard hydroplane race boat!

I can get a quart for around $6 at Bass Pro Shops next time I'm there, money is tight right now and I don't want to spend $12 for a quart just to use it to top off, or to not use it at all right now. I've never been one to sweat about brands, from 2 cycle oil to gear lube, I've typically used Quicksilver or Pennzoil,

I've heard alot of people talk about Amsoil, pretty much every time I try to find out anything about oil or lubricants, nobody will ever seem to give any other answer. It must be like crack!

I have no idea what you just said there but at least you got the answer to the original question. You'll only need a quart. You probably already know this but you fill it from the bottom hole and push it up to make sure you don't trap air. Happy boating!
