HI all;
1.)I see some mighty fancy containers of oil for lower units in the local boat store, but it appears they all contain SAE90 gear oil which I can buy for half the cost at WalMart. Any reason why I shouldn't?
2.)I have seen many people asking about fuel/oil mixtures for older engines (like my '69 Evinrude 28HP) and getting response like, "50:1 is what you should use now because the oil is better today". I am a little skeptical about such advice because you are also changing the fuel mixture besides the lubrication quality. Any opinions? I am inclined to stick with the original OMC recommendation...

Re: Lower unit oil and oil/fuel mixture

If your engine has many, many hours on it , it will not object to 50:1. Otherwise, stick with the design mix. That's what the carbs are calibrated for.

Use SAE 90 oil designed for outboard lower end use. One doesn't use moonshine to make a daquiri, so don't put generic grease in an OB lower end that you want to use for a while.

Red sky at night.
JB
