1959 EVINRUDE . 10018-04390.
I was looking at some lucas 75-90 today, it said it was ok for outbard gears .
Im not sure what oil to use, my selco book doesn't mention lower unit oil.
It olny refers to a pic. of a older oil product , but doesn't say what the gear oil should be..
And has anyone ever replaced the o-ring for the shift rod in the lower unit?
I know I need to buy a puller ,but was hoping for a trick......
thanks.............

I have the same motor I am trying to get fixed up and the guys at bass pro told me 80W-90. I am not sure how much they actually know so I would take that with a grain of salt. I just figured I would pass along the information I recieved. Just a question I have for you...What is your motors compression readings?

In 1959 most or all of the gear oil used in OBs was automotive EP-90 or more likely HP-90. These are inferior to any marine gear oil of today. If the motor is mechanical shift, use gear oil for mechanical shifts (most common). If they are electric shift, you must use Type C gear lube.

I suspect that in 1959 there were no multigrades nor special outboard gearbox oils nor API specifications either!

They would probably have used a plain grade 90 gear oil.

Now you have the multigrdes, i think the 75-90 is synthetic but not certain while the 80W-90 is a mineral oil as well as plain 90 from some sources (Yamaha?)

An outboard gear oil, we are led to believe, contains inhibitors to guard against the effects of water intrusion.

Any of those would be suitable I think you will find.

80-90W marine gear lube. Available at Basspro, Walmart and any other place that sells lubricant.

Although I currently use "marine lower unit lub" I have read a number of articles that contend conventional automotive differential lubs are just as good a lubricants as the marine versions. The difference is marine lubs have a touch more emulsifying agents to handle any water intrusion. So the net result is, if the lower unit doesn't leak, either lubricant is fine. If it does leak, use a marine lub. I have used automotive lubs in the past with absolutely no problem.

Back in 1959, the instructions were to "fill with Hypoid oil". That's car oil. New motors are more sophisticated and have higer loads on the parts and you may need better oil for them. But a 1959 is still a 1959. Use 80W-90 marine lube and you can't go wrong.
