lower unit lubrication

Hi there,

Can anyone tell me what lubricant to use in the lower unit of my 1982 Mariner 70 hp, S/N6228858? I don't have easy access to the OEM Quicksilver gear oil. Canadian tire sells a Type-C outboard gear oil, but I understand this is different from 90W gear oil and the two are incompatible. Any advice on Mercury/Quicksilver substitutes?

Thanks,
Wade

All I know is you cannot mix oils in the lower unit. use one stick with one. I used valvoline 90 wieght oil in mine I,m no pro and do not recommend anything other than the required oil for your engine

I use WalMart's SuperTech brand LU lube in my 1978 70hp 3cyl. No problems in 8 years of saltwater use. As long as it's a marine (i.e., has the emulsifiers) LU lube, should be fine. No need for anything $uper $pecial in that LU.

Any marine gear oil for mechanical shift motors. Second choice is any 85-90W auto gear oil.
That type C is for electric shift motors and is unsuitable for your motor.
