I have a 1972 50hp evenrude with electric shift my book says to use omc type C in the lower unit. Is that the same as normal lower end lube or is it something special?

Re: lower unit lube

It's different than the standard lower unit lube.Need to get the type C that the manual specifies.Dealer should carry it under the name,"premium blend."(not to be confused with HBO's comedy show) ;)

Re: lower unit lube

I owned the same motor for a few years. It ran great and I did like the electric shift.

Make sure of two things:

1. Use Type C LU lube. This is very very important. If you use 90 weight oil, your gearcase will not work properly.

2. LU is properly sealed. In most LU's, a little water won't kill it. It's not good, but a little water can be tolerated. Not so with the electric gearboxes. It's not that expensive to get it re-sealed. I had it done with a new water pump and it was about $250 Cdn.

Hope this helps.
