Lower unit is toast, Upper seems OK...Now What?

My lower unit is toast....My upper unit seems ok...my gear oil had water and metal shavings in it....Can I flush my upper and mate it with a "used but good" lower?

If that doesn't work....

I have another upper but the U-joints are seized up... Can you take the U-joints and drive shaft out of one upper and put in another? I assume you need special tools for this...

No expert here but it being the lower and the lube only makes a connection through one little hole I would think your OK to just replace the lower. My comment will give you a bump back to the top and hope someone with more experance will assist.

then you also had water mixed in the upper. A would do a full teardown ,inspect bearings and seals first.Find out how the water got in .
