lower unit help 98 40hp mariner

hello everyone, i am new to the site and i have read old post for hours. my problem is i have a 98 40 hp mariner that a friend is giving me and it does not have a lower unit on it. it has tilt and trim controls with it. i cannot find the model number on it and the tag with the serial number is very hard to read. the serial number best i can read is 06801473. i would like to be able to find a lower unit for it used so to keep my cost down. can anyone tell me if there is a range of year models that will fit this unit. thanks for any info and help.

Post a pic of motor as that serial number says its a 75/90 hp not a 40hp

have pic but having trouble posting, rechecked the serial number and it is difficult to read. model is 40elpt0 sn is 06801473,06601423 or 06601473. i checked under hood and could not find any other sn markings. i want to think the 06601423 is the number after looking at it. will keep trying to post the pic

found a lower unit, can anyone tell me if it might work on the motor.i have tried to post a picture of my motor, but it is unable to load to server. i have tried all three ways on tutorial. pretty sure the correct sn is 06601423.model is 40ELPTO OUTBOARD LOWER UNIT/GEARCASE 1643-9539T18.
