hi everyone,i am very new to iboats and boating overall, never owned a boat till now,41 years later, anyway,i was taking off my lower unit the other day because i noticed my telltale was not peeing, well,i figured out by some youtube videos i probably need to replace the water pump impeller,so,i pulled the lower unit and my clutch dog fell out,now i can't figure out which way it goes back in,plus i am having problems getting the l/o back on,any help would be highly appreciated,thanks...

can you post pictures of what you mean by clutch dog ? take a look at the parts diagrams when everything (shift shaft, water tube driveshaft) is right the lower unit will come back in it's place easily don't force it ! parts diagrams at marineengine.com get a mercury outboard service manual and learn about the motor. run a piece of fine wire up tell tale water fitting to un clog

Here is the parts list for your engine.

MERC 650 - Mercury, Mercruiser, Force, etc. Parts Lookup

See item 46A under GEAR HOUSING ASSEMBLY,COMPLETE as this may be what fell out. If you scroll down to 46A and double click on it, it will blow up for you. That is the newer type reverse lock cam but yours may be the older two piece metal cam. Let us know what you have.

Here is a link to the condensed version of the Clymer manual to assist you in getting it back together again. Download it soonest to your computer as the link is short lived.

MERCURY - MERCURY FOUR-CYLINDER MODELS (1969-1989).: Small Engine Repair Reference Center Home

The two pictures M9-48 (old style two piece cam) and M9-49 (newer style one piece composite) are not too clear in this link so though this is not your engine, this link (figures M12-63 and M12-64)shows the figures more clearly:
